How ‘Logan’ Movie Changed The Comics: 6 Biggest Differences From Marvel's ‘Old Man Logan’ Story
“Logan,” Hugh Jackman’s ninth and final X-Men film as Wolverine, grossed $85.3 million at the box-office over the weekend in the United States and proved once again that R-rated superhero movie can be successful.
While both critics and fans have enjoyed the release, like any superhero movie, some liberties were taken to adapt the story from its source material. Loosely based on the 2008 comic book series “Old Man Logan,” the big screen adaptation and the book share the same basic concept about an aged Wolverine who is taking a road trip for a job but the comparisons stop there.
If you haven’t seen “Logan” or read the book, there are spoilers ahead. Check out the six biggest differences below:
1. The Job
In “Logan,” Wolverine is asked to escort an 11-year-old girl named Laura (Dafne Keen) to a place called Eden in North Dakota. In the comics, Wolverine teams up with a now-blind Hawkeye to travel to the capital of New Babylon and deliver a secret package.
2. The Death of the X-Men
In the latest film, it is revealed that Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) suffered a seizure in Westchester, New York, killing several members of the X-Men. This differs from the comics where Logan himself kills the X-Men, after being tricked into an illusion by the villain Mysterio.
3. The Setting
The biggest change between the film and the comics is the overall setting. In the story, the United States has been divided and conquered by the supervillains Abomination, Magneto, Doctor Doom and Red Skull who now have their own territories. This backdrop is left out of the movie.
4. The Package
In “Old Man Logan,” when Logan and Hawkeye finally reached the capital it was revealed the package they were transporting contained the Super Soldier Serum. The two are then shot and killed by undercover S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, but Logan’s body is able to heal itself. In the film, Logan’s package is Laura and he eventually realizes she is a clone of him who is to be used as a weapon.
5. Deaths Of Those Close To Wolverine
With less characters in “Logan,” Wolverine only loses his friend Caliban and Charles Xavier after the two were killed. In the comics, Wolverine’s family is killed by the Hulk Gang (a group of Hulk and She-Hulk’s grandchildren).
6. The Death Of Logan
Like in any comic book story arc, a superhero never stays dead, and “Old Man Logan” is no different. After fighting Hulk in the comic’s final battle, Wolverine is consumed by him but is able to regenerate inside the Hulk’s stomach, eventually bursting out and killing him. After discovering the Hulk’s baby, Bruce Banner Jr., Wolverine and the child ride off into the sunset with the intentions of creating a new group of superheroes.
But with “Logan” being the final film for Jackman’s Wolverine character, the ending undergoes a major switch. After fighting X-24, Logan is impaled on a tree branch. While Laura is able to kill X-24, she can’t save Logan. Following his death, he is buried by Laura before continuing on her journey.
