How Meghan Markle Lifted Husband Prince Harry From Being A Commoner
Meghan Markle was an important factor on how Prince Harry’s status as a commoner was changed.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have always been a picture of love. They still hold hands and touch each other when they step out in public together. However, some are still not convinced with their romance since they believe that Markle just married Prince Harry to be more popular.
However, according to Express, Markle actually gave Prince Harry a royal title because the duke was technically a commoner before they got married. A member of the royal family is deemed a commoner when he is not a peer (duke, marquess, earl, viscount or a baron) with the sovereign being an exception. Prince Harry was not a peer before he married the former “Suits” star, so he was legally and technically a commoner.
Prince Harry was only given the title of Duke of Sussex when he married Markle. So by marrying Markle, he moved from being a commoner to peer on his wedding day. On the same day, Markle also became a peer as she received the title, The Duchess of Sussex.
Prince Harry and Markle’s son Archie Harrison has no royal title. Thus, he will remain a commoner unless he chooses to take a title when he grows up. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are not the first ones to decline royal titles for their child, Princess Anne also refused official titles for her children Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall.
Prince William and Kate Middleton’s children would not have received royal titles if not for the Queen’s decree in 2013 granting royal titles to all of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s children regardless of their gender. Under the ruling only male great-grandchildren of Queen Elizabeth II would be called prince. If the couple had a girl she would not have a royal title and without the changes, Prince George’s siblings Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis would also not have royal titles.
