How Prince Edward ‘Incensed’ Queen Mother After She Repositioned The Royal Family
Prince Edward reportedly incensed the Queen Mother following an incident from the 1980s.
At that time, Queen Elizabeth II’s youngest child became visibly upset when he didn’t receive rave reviews about “It’s A Royal Knockout.” In the Channel 5 documentary “Scandals at the Palace,” royal expert Richard Kay said that Prince Edward asked the press what they thought of the show.
And when they couldn’t give him a pleasant answer, the dad of two threw his toys out of the pram. While at the press conference, Prince Edward sarcastically thanked everyone for being bloody enthusiastic before walking out on them.
“He displayed a very impetuous side to his character and, of course, it was reflected in the television broadcast and the newspaper accounts at the time. The Queen Mother, in particular, was incensed,” Kay said.
According to the royal expert, all it took was one fell swoop for Prince Edward to set up the entire royal family as complete laughing stocks. The Queen Mother, in particular, was gravely affected because she worked hard to reposition the royal family, as well as her daughter, with dignity and gravitas.
Following the incident, Prince Edward managed to take the entire royal family back a couple of years. And prior to this, Prince Edward also made headlines after he announced his resignation from the Royal Marines to the media channels instead of the royal family.
Ingrid Seward, a royal expert and the editor of Majesty magazine, said that the announcement shocked Prince Edward’s older sister Princess Anne.
“Princess Anne was driving back to Gloucestershire and nearly put her car in a ditch when she heard on the radio that Edward had resigned. The last thing that she knew, they’d had this really good talk and he’s said he’d stay in,” Seward said.
Kay said that some members of the royal family felt that Prince Edward let them down. The Queen Mother was one of those that became disappointed with her grandson.
