Royal fans were left in shock when Prince Charles and Princess Diana announced their separation, which put a spotlight on their unstable marriage. However, once the couple split, it was difficult for them to co-parent their sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, in private.

Unfortunately for Diana, Prince Charles’ effort to provide a smooth transition for their sons, resulted in the late princess becoming “increasingly jealous” of the new woman, who was helping her husband raise their sons.

In the book “William’s Princess,” Robert Jobson claimed Charles struggled to measure up to Diana’s high standing in their children’s eyes. “When the boys were with their father they spent a great deal of time in the company of their cousins, Princess Anne’s children, Peter and Zara, who had also lived through the pain of a very public marriage breakdown,” he wrote.

“But Charles, perhaps stung by Diana’s criticism that he was emotionally unavailable, worried that he was not providing enough of the homeliness his sons needed. He realized that whenever his sons spent a weekend or a holiday with him in the country, as much as they loved the riding, fishing and shooting, something was lacking.”

As a result, the Prince of Wales made a crucial decision that would benefit Prince William and Prince Harry’s well being and also get under Princess Diana’s skin. “His solution was to infuriate Diana in a way he could not have imagined. He hired a nanny,” Jobson explained.

“It must have seemed perfectly natural to a man whose own childhood saw him spend more time in the care of his nanny and servants than his own mother and father. Thirty-year-old Tiggy Legge-Bourke seemed an ideal ‘surrogate mother,’ just the sort to inject a bit of zest into the lives of Charles’ sons when they stayed with him.”

Although the boys were happy with the new staff member, Princess Diana began to resent Charles. “They adored her and thought nothing of telling their increasingly jealous mother of the fact. They loved her to bits,” the royal author revealed.

“Perhaps a more confident woman than Diana might have seen this addition to her children’s life as just that – an addition, a bonus, a positive influence that in no way diminished her role in their development.”

Following Princess Diana’s death in 1997, Prince William and Prince Harry built an even stronger bond with Twiggy, and she attended Meghan Markle and Harry’s royal wedding in 2018.
