How Prince William Refused To Be An ‘Ornamental Royal’ Like Prince Harry
Prince William and Prince Harry both want to leave their mark as members of the royal family.
In the book “Harry: Life, Loss, and Love,” royal author Katie Nicholl said that the royal siblings have different ways of doing their job as royals but their goals remain the same.
“William had spoken about not wanting to be an ornamental royal and it was clear that for Harry, the emphasis was on making a real difference, as opposed to the traditional unveiling of plaques and ribbons,” she said.
Nicholl also said that the royal siblings have made conscientious decisions to be modern royals who were in touch with the world. They also use their charity way as a way of connecting to the public.
But despite Prince William and Prince Harry’s attempts, they still received criticism that they weren’t doing enough. The brothers were not named as the hardest working royals last year. The title was given to Princess Anne.
“There was some criticism… that the princes weren’t doing enough. It was true that William and Harry carried out far fewer engagements than other family members, but they did both have full-time military careers,” Nicholl said.
Tim O’Donovan revealed that the future King carried out less than half of the number of engagements that Prince Charles took part in last year. Prince Edward and Prince Andrew also reportedly carried out more engagements that Prince William and Prince Harry last year.
But according to O’Donovan, all of the royal engagements performed last year differed based on the time and the content. The time taken in preparation was also taken into consideration.
Meanwhile, Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle were branded as the least hardworking royals of last year. But it is important to note that the Duchess of Cambridge gave birth to Prince Louis in 2018. The Duchess of Sussex, on the other hand, only joined the royal family halfway through 2018.
