How To See Lin-Manuel Miranda's New Broadway Show 'Freestyle Love Supreme'
Lin-Manuel Miranda is making his return to Broadway. The "Hamilton" mastermind will bring his freestyle hip-hop show "Freestyle Love Supreme" to New York City's Booth Theatre this fall.
Miranda revealed the news on Tuesday night's episode of "The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon." During the talk show, he appeared on the "Freestyle Generator" segment, which challenged him to create a freestyle using three random words. After successfully completing the task, Fallon thanked the composer and segwayed into the announcement.
"You've proven yourself an amazing rapper," the host complimented Miranda, "and you actually have an exciting freestyle project coming to Broadway."
"Yes, that's true Jimmy. Before 'Hamilton,' before 'In The Heights,' my first time performing in New York was with a freestyle hip-hop group called Freestyle Love Supreme. We are coming to Broadway this fall at the Booth Theatre," Miranda announced.
"It's an entirely made up Broadway show," the Tony winner went on to explain. "You don't know who is gonna show up. Black Thought might show up, I might show up one night, Chris Jackson might show up one night. You don't know what is gonna happen. Come see us in September."
"Freestyle Love Supreme" was created by Miranda, Thomas Kail, and Anthony Veneziale in 2004. The New York Times reports that the group had an off-broadway run at the Greenwich House Theatre earlier this year.
“Fifteen years ago, when 'Freestyle Love Supreme' was first developed, the idea of bringing our little improv show to Broadway seemed completely out of the realm of possibility,” said Kail and Miranda in a statement, according to Playbill. "We’ve had many of our happiest and most fulfilling creative moments working on 'FLS' and are excited to see its next chapter unfold at the Booth Theatre. It is a show that consistently surprises us: we have no idea what to expect any time we do it— and isn’t that the true beauty of live theater? 'Freestyle Love Supreme' wouldn’t want or have it any other way!”
"Freestyle Love Supreme" will begin previews Sept. 13. The opening is set for Oct. 2 and the show is scheduled for a 16-week run. Tickets go on sale to American Express holders June 21 and to the general public on July 9.
