"In the early hours of Father’s Day (AU), my Dad peacefully passed away. And whilst there is deep sadness, I am filled with such gratitude and love," the actor wrote in the caption. "My Dad was, in a word, extraordinary."

"He devoted his life to his family, his work and his faith," the "X-Men" star added. "I pray he is now at peace with God," he wrote further. The actor shared a solo photo of his father wearing a black suit with a gray scarf around his neck.

Celebrities and fans took to the comments section to share their condolences.

One of the fans wrote, "Bless you, Hugh! Sending you all the love and prayers."

Another fan commented, "Rest in peace. Sending condolences and best wishes to you, and your loved ones."

In 2012, Hugh reflected on his childhood and how his father raised him and his siblings, Ralph, Zoe, Sonya and Ian, alone after his mom left. He revealed how his father always gave importance to family more than work.

"It's always about the family," he said during his interview on "60 Minutes." "It's always, 'How's [wife] Deb?' It's not about work and I think that's him living with, probably some of his regrets and feelings of maybe he... at the wrong time put too much into his career and he doesn't want me to make that mistake. And so, in his gentle way, he always reminds me that this is the most important thing," the actor said.

On the work front, Hugh is currently filming, "The Son," which is based on a stage play penned by Florian Zeller. He will also feature in movies like "The Good Spy," "Enzo Ferrari" and "Apostle Paul."

Hugh is married to Deborra-Lee Furness. The couple got married in 1996 and share two kids together -- Oscar Maximilian and Ava Eliot.
