Hulu's 'Dollface' Canceled, Won't Return For Season 3
Hulu has canceled its comedy series, "Dollface," after just two seasons.
The series, headlined by "2 Broke Girls" star Kat Dennings, will not return to the streaming platform following the release of its second season in February.
"Dollface" follows the story of Jules Wiley (Dennings), who reconnects with her best friends after her breakup with a longtime boyfriend. The show also stars Brenda Song, "Pretty Little Liars" alum Shay Mitchell and Esther Povitsky.
It was first aired in 2019 and was renewed for a second season in January 2020. Production of the second season was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Both seasons ran for 10 episodes.
Season 2 showed Wiley, who turned 30, juggling her time between social activities and her work and love life. It also saw the return of Wiley's boss, played by Malin Akerman, and the addition of Canadian YouTuber Lilly Singh as a bar owner, who explores a relationship and business deal with Stella (played by Mitchell).
Aside from Singh, there were several other additions to the show, including Jayson Blair as a love interest of Izzy (played by Povitsky). Corinne Foxx, daughter of Jamie Foxx, also appears on "Dollface" Season 2 as the daughter of a music industry tycoon who strikes up a friendship with Song's character, Madison. Luke Cook plays the role of a musician and love interest of Wiley.
The show's two seasons received only a 54% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though it had a 78% audience approval rating, Variety reported.
The outlet's chief TV critic Daniel D'Addario said the first season was not compelling enough to hold its audience.
"Its fantasies aren't fanciful enough to compel us, and its reality seems perpetually elided. In that way, perhaps it's a show for its moment. But in all, its vision of friendship and its aesthetic of goofy quirk feels that worst thing for a would-be viral hit: Late," he said.
