Hummus Recall 2014: Target, Trader Joe’s, Giant Eagle Dips Recalled Due To Listeria Contamination

You may want to find a condiment other than hummus to dip your chips in this Memorial Day weekend. Following a listeria contamination scare, popular retailers such as Target, Trader Joe’s and Giant Eagle Supermarkets across the U.S. are pulling thousands of pounds of Lansal, Inc., (Hot Mama’s Foods) items from their shelves this week.

According to a report released by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), approximately 14,860 pounds of the Springfield, Massachusetts and Chicago, Illinois based manufacturer’s hummus and dip products are being voluntarily recalled due to a possible Listeria contamination. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that Listeria (officially known as Listeria monocytogenes) is a bacteria known to cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weakened immune systems such as the sick and the elderly.

According to the FDA, the contamination was reportedly discovered during a routine testing of Hot Mamma’s Foods product Target Archer Farms Traditional Hummus (10 ounce). Following the discovery, Lansal, Inc., has reportedly recalled all products manufactured at the same facility and items distributed to wholesalers and retailers during the same time period.

Despite issuing the recall, no illnesses have been reported according to the FDA.

Customers in possession of any recalled items are being advised to immediately discontinue consumption. Items can be returned to their original place of purchase for a full refund.
