I-55 Bandit: FBI Seeks Public's Help In Catching Serial Bank Robber Who Hit Multiple States [PHOTOS]

The alleged I-55 Bandit has turned himself in to authorities, the FBI announced Wednesday. The suspect has been identified as 19-year-old Andrew Mayberry of O'Fallon, Ill. He was arrested and charged with one of the bank robberies -- the July 2 holdup of a Commerce Bank in Missouri. The bureau credited its I-55 Bandit billboard campaign with Mayberry's surrender.

“We want to thank the news media and digital billboard companies for providing coverage on the I-55 Bandit,” said Dean Bryant, the FBI's special agent in charge of its St. Louis bureau. “We have no doubt Mayberry’s surrender was a direct result of the extensive media attention. We also appreciate the dozens of solid tips we were provided by the public. The FBI has long relied on the public to help identify and capture criminals.”

The serial bank robber dubbed the "I-55 Bandit" had been able to elude federal authorities since May. He is believed to have robbed 10 banks and trying to rob two others across five states: Illinois, Missouri, Maryland, West Virginia and Tennessee, the FBI said in a statement Tuesday. In all of the successful robberies, the bandit passed along a note indicating he was armed. No one was wounded in the robberies and authorities are unsure how much money has been stolen from the 10 banks.

The I-55 Bandit was described as young (the FBI believes he is in his early to mid-20s,) tall (6-feet to 6-feet-3 inches tall), white and having short brown or strawberry blonde hair.

The suspect was dubbed the I-55 Bandit by the FBI’s St. Louis bureau, because all of the banks the robber hit in St. Louis were along Interstate 55.

The I-55 Bandit robbed branches belonging to all different banks. He robbed a Scott Credit Union in Illinois, a U.S. Bank branch in Missouri, a First State Community Bank in Missouri, a Hartford Bank in Maryland, a TD Bank branch in Maryland, a Commerce Bank in Missouri, a Wells Fargo Bank branch in Maryland, a Susquehanna Bank in Maryland, Huntington National Bank in West Virginia and the Bank of Jackson in Tennessee. He also attempted to rob First State Bank and Clayton Bank, both in Jackson, Tenn., the FBI said.
