Ian Somerhalder Reveals That He’s Single; Talks About ‘Vampire Diaries’ Damon And Elena Relationship

“Vampire Diaries” fans can breathe a deep sigh of relief. Pull up your dream wedding Pinterest boards and whip out your Ian Somerhalder cardboard cutout because the 35-year-old actor is very single. After new romance rumors sparked in late April, the CW star finally came clean to E! News about his relationship status.

“There is no dating,” Somerhalder revealed to E!’s Kristin Dos Santos. “I am solo as solo can get. I can’t imagine dating in Hollywood. I’m a serial monogamist, man.”

Ian Somerhalder’s relationship confession came a couple weeks after E! News reported that the “Vampire Diaries” star may be dating Molly Swenson, a former “American Idol” contestant. The pair was reportedly spotted casually holding hands at a couple of industry parties.

“They seemed happy, casual and enjoying the evening,” an insider told E!

However reports at a possible romance between Somerhalder and Swenson turned out to be false. The “American Idol” alum took to Twitter to reveal that she has been “off the market” for two years. Instead the duo are just good friends who work together. Swenson is the chief operating officer at RYOT News, an organization where Somerhalder is on the advisory board.

And romance isn’t just lacking in Somerhalder’s personal life. The actor also talked to E! about his on-screen love life.

As “Vampire Diaries” fans know, Somerhalder’s Damon has had a rocky on-and-off relationship with Nina Dobrev’s Elena. Currently the duo, who are nicknamed Delena, are very off right now thanks to a verbal meltdown by Damon in episode 18.

“I can’t be your friend,” Damon passionately explained to Elena in the episode. “I can’t see you anymore. I don’t want to hear your voice, I don’t want to talk to you, I don’t even want to look at you. And I sure as hell don’t want to be your friend.”

Unfortunately the drama in Mystic Falls keeps pulling them together. And despite their strong feelings for each other, Somerhalder says that Damon (and Stefan!) are trouble for Elena.

“We’ve killed her entire family,” the actor told Dos Santos of the troublesome Salvatore brothers. “Destroyed her entire life.”

But besides those minor details, Ian Somerhalder added that the age difference between Damon and Elena is a major issue.

“Damon is 173-years-old,” he continued. “The ultimate case of cradle robbing.”
