Iconic H&H Bagels on W. 80th St. to Close
The H&H Bagels store located on West 80th St. and Broadway will reportedly close. The iconic bagel store, which opened in 1972, has been featured on the television shows Seinfeld and Friends.
H&H Bagels filed for bankruptcy in February, but the store on West 46th St. will remain open. The business was launched by Helmer Toro who pleaded guilty last year to state tax charges.
An employee who answered the phone Wednesday at the store on West 46th St. refrained from commenting on the other location's closure.
According to the Associated Press, the store will close Monday.
City Councilwoman Gale A. Brewer, who represents the Upper West Side, expressed that the loss of the store would be a crushing blow to the neighborhood. It's an institution, almost like a museum, Brewer told the New York Times. Everybody dreams of their store being a destination, but this one really is a destination. You can literally get a hot bagel at 3 o'clock in the morning, and it literally comes out of the oven in front of you.
