"Luther" fans have something new to look forward to as Idris Elba is reprising his role as the brilliant but self-destructive Detective Chief Inspector John Luther in an upcoming movie.

On Monday, Netflix announced plans for a feature film based on the BBC drama series "Luther." The news comes years after Elba started campaigning for his troubled detective character to appear on the big screen, according to Entertainment Weekly.

The "Luther" movie will be written by creator Neil Cross. Elba will star in the film alongside "Widows" star Cynthia Erivo and "Black Panther" actor Andy Serkis.

It is unclear if Ruth Wilson will reprise her role as serial killer and romantic interest Alice Morgan in the upcoming Netflix movie.

Announcing the project on Twitter, Netflix shared photos of the cast members and wrote, "Luther is coming back! Idris Elba will reprise his iconic role — joined by Cynthia Erivo and Andy Serkis — in a new feature film written by series creator Neil Cross."

The announcement received mixed responses on the platform.

"'Luther' made by Netflix... Really hope that you will not ruin it like you did with 'Lucifer,'" one Twitter user commented.

Wrote another, "Is Ruth Wilson coming back too? Because female villains are the baddest b---hes in the game."

"OMG STOP IT!! 'Luther' is brilliant and will wait anxiously for updates," another fan added.

"Can’t remember how it ended but I thought it ended," a fourth user wrote.

In the "Luther" Season 5 finale, Luther and Alice had a face-off where she found herself on the verge of falling to her death. Luther offered to help, but she refused to take his hand and took the long drop. Her body laid motionless on the ground until it was gone. Luther was later arrested.

When Elba was asked about the finale, the actor said that it was "hard to say" what may lie ahead for his character.

"I feel like John has to make some decision in jail," Elba told EW in 2019. "It's quite clear that it would be very difficult for him to be a policeman moving forward. I think that's a great setup for a movie. The last few seasons have been more like mini-movies, and film allows us to now have more dramatic pin points moments that are slightly more compressed and it's a bigger but smaller dose of 'Luther.'"

There is no official release date for Netflix's "Luther" project yet. "Luther" Season 5 aired in 2019.
