Alec Baldwin is canceling his other projects after the fatal accidental shooting on the set of his film "Rust," a report says.
An unnamed source told People that Baldwin, 63, was "hysterical and absolutely inconsolable for hours" after a prop gun mishap on the New Mexico set of "Rust" Thursday killed 42-year-old cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injured 48-year-old director Joel Souza.
"Everyone knows this was an accident, but he's absolutely devastated," the insider added.
Following the "devastating" shooting, Baldwin decided to cancel other projects and "take some time to himself and re-center himself," as he has during difficult times in the past, according to the insider.
"This is how he handles difficult times. Whenever something bad happens, in the short term, he removes himself from [the] public eye," the source said.
The insider continued, "[Baldwin] is someone who really deeply cares, so he can be very hard on himself. That's true in general, in situations nowhere near as serious as this. But in this situation, it's a whole other level because of the loss of life involved."
The source went on to explain that it will take time for Baldwin to "figure all this out" so he is stepping away from the spotlight to "take a while to himself, to be with his family."
The Santa Fe Sheriff's Department confirmed in a press release that Hutchins and Souza were "shot when a prop firearm was discharged" by Baldwin on the Santa Fe, New Mexico, set of "Rust" Thursday afternoon during a camera test.
Hutchins was airlifted to the University of New Mexico Hospital where she died from her injuries, police said. Souza was hospitalized, but his reps told Deadline that he has since been released.
No charges have been filed and no arrests have been made thus far in connection with the shooting. An investigation remains ongoing.
Baldwin spoke out for the first time about the incident in a statement he issued via Twitter Friday.
"There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours," Baldwin wrote.
He continued, "I'm fully cooperating with the police investigation to address how this tragedy occurred and I am in touch with her husband, offering my support to him and his family. My heart is broken for her husband, their son, and all who knew and loved Halyna."
The "Rust" film set has been shut down following the incident, with production indefinitely paused, according to production company Rust Movie Productions.
"We have halted production on the film for an undetermined period of time and are fully cooperating with the Santa Fe Police Department's investigation," the company said in a statement Thursday. "We will be providing counseling services to everyone connected to the film as we work to process this awful event."
