  • Apple improved Sleep features in iOS 14 and watchOS 7
  • The improvements allow the devices to help users get more sleep
  • The features are built on earlier sleep tracking features

Apple has introduced a slew of features to iOS 14 and watchOS 7. These include new Sleep tracking features that are built on earlier functions the company added to the operating systems and their respective devices.

Earlier sleep tracking features allowed users to set their preferred sleep time as well as their desired number of hours of sleep. The iPhone and Apple Watch will then help them achieve these by notifying them if it's time to sleep and wake them up after reaching their desired duration. The devices will also keep a record of how much sleep the user had over a period of time.

Apple decided to build on this and added a slew of enhancements, including a new mode that helps users get better sleep and new features that will help them monitor their sleep quality.

Sleep Mode

Sleep Mode is a setting that helps the user get more sleep by reducing interactions with the iPhone and Apple Watch. This mode was created to help people focus more on sleeping than tinkering with their devices. It's basically Do Not Disturb paired with a softer, dimmer screen.

Sleep Mode can be enabled or disabled manually or automatically on an iPhone running iOS 14 and manually on an Apple Watch running on watchOS 7.

Automatic Sleep Mode in iOS 14

  • First, users will need to launch the Health app on their iPhones, Browse and tap on Sleep.
  • Second, once there, scroll to the bottom to look for and tap on Options.
  • Third, once there, go to the Sleep Mode section and tap on the toggle next to Turn On Automatically. This feature will only work if the user has set a Bedtime.

Manually enable or disable Sleep Mode in iOS 14

  • First, users will need to access the Control Center on an iPhone.
  • Second, once there, users should tap on the Bed icon.

Enabling/disabling Sleep Mode in watchOS 7

  • First, users will need to access the Control Center on their Apple Watch
  • Second, once there, users should tap on the Bed icon.

Sleep Tracking

Sleep tracking has been improved in iOS 14 and watchOS 7. It will use a combination of data from the iPhone and Apple Watch and will also include data acquired when Bedtime is enabled.

To see sleep data, users will need to launch the Health app on their iPhones, Browse, then tap on Sleep. The app will show an overview of the user's sleep data. Tapping on Show More Sleep Data reveals more information, such as the average sleep duration the user had over a period of time.
