iOS 5 Jailbreak: Is it Safe to Use RedSn0w?
There is good news for Apple device users, with Dev Team member MuscleNerd having announced the release of RedSn0w 0.0.0b9, a tethered jailbreak.
Redsn0w 0.9.9b9 tethered JB released. Please see update #17 for what's new! MuscleNerd tweeted. This update has been so long in coming specifically because of those other things, he continued.
RedSn0w can be used to jailbreak a range of iOS devices - iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPad 1, iPod Touch 4G, iPod Touch 3G and iPod Touch 2G.
It was earlier reported that RedSn0w would require the user to update his device to a newer version of iOS in order to jailbreak it; this meant that users who have unlocked their iPhone should have kept away from RedSn0w, since it could result in the loss of the ability to unlock.
However, current reports suggest that users depending on an unlock for the iPhone, while simultaneously running and jailbreaking the newest iOS version (iOS 5), can use RedSn0w. in addition, it is a lightweight utility available for quick download and can function on both Mac and Windows systems. It is capable of performing both tethered and untethered jailbreaks, based on the device and the firmware version the device is running.
A tethered jailbreak will mean the user cannot reboot his device without a tethered boot - which requires access to a computer.
On the other hand, an untethered jailbreak, which is more desirable, will allow users to reboot the device at will, without needing a computer.
