The upcoming iPhone 11 is perhaps the least favorite smartphone that’s expected to come out from Apple’s smartphone line.

For months, it has already taken a beating from various Apple analysts and fans, with most of the attention centered on the triple-camera module that’s expected to be the main attraction of the 2019 iPhone. Some have called the feature absolutely ugly, no thanks to the large camera bump enclosing the three new lenses of the phone.

This has actually led some analysts to suggest that it’s better to wait out a year before making a new iPhone purchase, since the supposed iPhone 12 is expected to be Apple’s best one yet. But how do the 2019 phones fare against the 2020 iPhones? We’ve come up with ways to compare the two iOS smartphone lines based on available data to help you decide if this year is the best time to buy another iPhone.

First is the connectivity. This year’s iPhone won’t be getting the much-anticipated 5G network, unlike the 2020 iPhones that are said to be 5G-ready. Per an earlier CNBC news report, a note from reliable industry insider JPMorgan said that Apple’s 2020 iPhones are indeed getting 5G connectivity.

This is definitely a big blow to this year’s line because it would pale in comparison to the faster and more powerful 2020 iPhones.

Next is the screen. The 120Hz OLED Retina display which promises crisp and vibrant graphics also won’t be available to the 2019 iPhones. In a tweet by insider Ice Universe, it was revealed that the Cupertino giant is indeed considering a switchable 60Hz/120Hz rate screen on the iPhone and is currently in talks with Samsung and LG for it. However, this feature won’t be available until 2020.

As for the controversial iPhone camera, this year is going to be exciting for Apple phones because of the triple-camera module. The new feature is said to make Apple cameras one of the most powerful in the market once the new devices arrive.

Apart from the wide-angle and telephoto capabilities that have been available on previous models, the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Max are also expected to have a new ultrawide angle sensor. Per the report, all the new phones will get the new feature called "Smart Frame” that’s designed to help users fix lopsided photos using extra images taken by the other lenses.

The 2019 lineup’s front camera notch size will also remain the same. However, expect the 3D Touch to no longer be available, but there will be an option for slow-motion video recording for the front cam.

For battery, there’s a new logic board setup which could be the foundation of future iPhones, and it is expected to be available in this year’s phones. The setup could ensure a better battery life for the new smartphones.

Verdict: Both 2019 iPhones and the 2020 iPhones have their own merit, so deciding to buy one this year could offer some notable advantages. The 2020 iPhones could prove to be more powerful than this year’s models, however, so it wouldn’t hurt as well if Apple fans could wait one more year for what’s set to be a more exciting option in the iPhone 12.
