  • Some models of Apple's 2020 iPhone 12 will reportedly feature sensor-shift stabilization
  • The new Apple camera innovation will only be available on higher-end iPhone 12 models or those with 5G support, according to report
  • Apple has yet to confirm the existence of the iPhone 12

In an unconfirmed leak, Apple’s 2020 flagship smartphone, presumably iPhone 12 with 5G support, may feature the next generation camera innovation of the Cupertino company. Dubbed as sensor-shift stabilization, the technology moves the camera sensor of the iPhone 12 to compensate whenever an excessive motion is detected. The new report comes from DigiTimes, which cites industry sources claiming that this feature would be in some models of the iPhone 12.

One of the many advantages of sensor stabilization is its ability to work with any iPhone lenses, even the external ones that users add, says Apple Insider. The alternative is lens stabilization, where the same motion detection triggers the lens to adjust to compensate. While lens stabilization is more effective than sensor stabilization, it could require special lenses.

Optical image stabilization in iPhones at present uses a gyroscope to move the whole camera configuration, including lenses and sensors, to reduce small vibrations or shakes. Additionally, iPhones are equipped with electronic image stabilization for video recording, which uses motion sensors of the smartphone to shift the recorded area on the sensor to counter vibrations and shakes.

Several sites are reporting that the sensor-shift stabilization that will soon be in some iPhone 12 models could bring image stabilization in the ultrawide camera. But, the ultrawide and telephoto lenses are not only lens configurations that have a single sensor, according to MacWorld. These are the whole camera modules with their independent lens and sensors arrays.

For sensor-shift technology to be used to ultrawide camera on the iPhone, it has to be independently used to a particular camera sensor, adds the report. The 2020 iPhone 12 range is anticipated to feature four various models. TFI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo earlier claimed that the models would likely vary by screen ranging from 4.7-inch LCD to 6.7-inch OLED, as well as a number of cameras ranging between single to the triple-lens system.

Apple has not yet confirmed the existence of the iPhone 12, and while the latest report is impressive, we suggest taking this with a big grain of salt. Even if the reports are accurate, the company’s plans for the product could still change. There’s still a lot of time before features like this one could be set to stone.
