iPhone 12 Pro Tip: What You Should Do First After Buying New Smartphone
KEY POINTS
- Apple recently released the new iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro
- Those who purchased the new devices should know how to set it up correctly
- Setting them up the right way helps iPhone owners have a better overall user experience
Apple’s new iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro may have already arrived for those who pre-ordered the devices or purchased them early. Those who buy one for themselves, however, will first need to do a few things ideally before they start using their new handsets.
These actions will help consumers get the best user experience from their new iPhone.
Back up previously-used iPhone
This goes without saying. Users should make it a point to back up the iPhone they are currently using so they can seamlessly move on to a newer model when it arrives.
Here’s how to manually back up an iPhone running on iOS 14.
- First, users should go to Settings.
- Second, users should tap on their Apple ID at the top of the screen.
- Third, from there, users should go to iCloud then to Backup.
- Fourth, users should tap on Backup Now to create a backup. Users can also view their last backup here.
Users can then set up their new iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 Pro from backup. This will allow users to transfer apps and data from their old iPhone to the new one.
Set up Face ID
Now, after transferring apps and content from backup, users will need to set up Face ID on their iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 Pro. Face ID allows for easy unlocking, which means users will get to enjoy their new device after they look at the TrueDepth camera in front.
The iPhone will ask users to set Face ID up the first time it is turned on. Those who skip the setup process, or want to add an alternate appearance, can do so by going to Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Set up Face ID and follow on-screen instructions.
Disable 5G if it’s unnecessary
The new iPhone 12 series offers support for 5G. Users who don’t have coverage in their areas, however, will not enjoy the faster network standard. Forcing the devices to look for 5G in places where it’s not available will only result in faster battery drain.
Users with no 5G network in their area should disable 5G data in iOS 14 this way:
- First, users should launch Settings.
- Second, users should go to Cellular, then tap on Cellular Data.
- Third, once there, users should tap on Voice and Data.
- Fourth, users should choose LTE.
This process disables 5G and tells the iPhone to look for 4G-LTE networks.
