Apple enthusiasts are well aware of this time of year. The newest iPhone is expected to hit the shelves in its typical launch month of September.

There is no confirmed information on what the new iPhone will be called but it's expected to be the "iPhone 13" or the "iPhone 12s."

Apple continues to decline comment on the new release but an analyst did leak some information that can be expected to Nicole Nguyen from The Wall Street Journal.

During the pandemic in October 2020, Apple launched to great success the iPhone 12 mini (5.4in), the iPhone 12 (6.1in), the iPhone 12 Pro (6.1in), and the iPhone 12 Pro Max (6.7in).

The Journal spoke with Apple analyst Gene Munster about what he expects from the new iPhone.

Continued 5G progression

“We’re in the 5G chapter of the iPhone, which is a multiyear chapter,” said Munster. “It’s going to be pretty modest over years two and three.”

Apple is known for only adding slight changes to its next model release when it introduces a large update.

Munster expects “incremental improvements” that include a faster processor and longer battery life.

Camera Update

The main incremental improvement is an impressive camera update.

“There’s a pretty healthy set of rumors about the camera, which are true. I believe that this will be Apple’s selling point this time around,” Munster said.

Munster referenced a Bloomberg report that goes over how the newest models of the MacBook support “portrait mode” while taking a video. Samsung Galaxy phones already have this feature.

New iPhone Mini

Also available could be a new version of the iPhone Mini, which only accounted for 5% of iPhone 12 sales. With the Mini being an affordable “niche” option, Munster suggests a new Mini could be on the way.

“It’s a niche, but people in that niche tend to like them,” he said.

Removal of Lightning Port, ProMotion Display, Apple Pencil

Meanwhile, the blog Apple Insider reports there's a possibility of removing the lightning port, a new “ProMotion Display” which would optimize viewing content to keep battery life under control, as well as a possible Apple pencil.
