KEY POINTS

  • Apple was rumored in the past to feature solid-state buttons on its iPhones
  • The rumor died and until now, solid-state buttons are not available on any iPhone models
  • Apple is believed to use these buttons on high-end models of iPhone 15

iPhone 15, the supposed next flagship iPhone series from Apple would reportedly replace its traditional volume and power buttons with solid-state buttons alongside three Taptic engines, according to a reliable industry insider.

The latest information came from TF International and supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who explained that the volume and power buttons on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max or high-end iPhone 15 models would embrace a solid-state design, similar to that found on the iPhone 7'a Home button. The tech juggernaut uses the same concept on its Mac trackpads, which do not move but mimic the feeling of being pressed.

"My latest survey indicates that the volume button and power button of two high-end iPhone 15/2H23 new iPhone models may adopt a solid-state button design (similar to the home button design of iPhone 7/8/SE2 & 3) to replace the physical/mechanical button design," Kuo said in a tweet.

To make this possible, Apple would reportedly use Taptic engines on the left and right internal sides of the iPhone 15 to make them feel as though they are pressing physical buttons. This upcoming change would also mean that instead of one, Apple would use three Taptic engines in every iPhone 15 model.

These taptic engines would provide haptic feedback each time the user presses the button. "The buttonless design & switch to USB-C are two of the major updates for iPhone 15," Kuo confirmed.

"Vibrator suppliers Luxshare ICT & AAC are undoubtedly the main buttonless design winners. Taptic Engine shipments will grow by 80-100% YoY in 2023, thanks to the buttonless design," he added in another tweet.

"It is expected that high-end Android smartphones will also follow Apple's design to create new selling points, which is a structural positive for the mobile phone vibrator industry," Kuo revealed.

It is worth noting that this is not the first time we hear about solid-state buttons on an upcoming iPhone model. If Kuo's information would prove accurate in the future, then it would mean the iPhone models with solid-state buttons would have improved dust and water resistance.

Apple has not yet said anything about the iPhone 15. In the absence of official information from the tech giant, consumers should temper their expectations and take the latest leak about the iPhone 15 as highly speculative at this stage.
