iPhone 8 To Get LG Facial Recognition System Module For 3D Front-Facing Camera
LG Innotek, a unit of LG group, will supply 3D facial recognition modules for Apple’s upcoming iPhone 8, Korea Economic Daily reported Thursday.
Apple and LG Innotek got together last year to develop the first-ever 3D facial recognition camera, which will be used for “a variety of applications from biometric authentication to games,” the report said.

LG already supplies Apple with dual-lens camera modules found on the back of the iPhone 7. The upcoming camera is expected to be on the front side of the iPhone 8 and be smaller than the one on the iPhone 7. Both reasons are why LG is building a plant, the report said.
LG reportedly invested 269.7 billion won ($239.5 million) in a new facility that will be dedicated to Apple’s orders. The facility was announced at the end of April and had an initial deal price of about 200 billion won ($177.6 million).
KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in February the iPhone 8 will feature a 3D facial recognition camera system. The 3D sensing camera could replace the touch ID feature on current iPhones while other rumors suggest Apple will ditch the physical home button for the iPhone 8. The 3D camera could also support augmented reality capabilities.
However, previous reports claimed Himax Technologies would supply 3D sensors for Apple’s upcoming iPhone 8. Another report added that optical and photonic products manufacturer Lumentum would supply parts as well.
In March, it was reported STMicroelectronics would work on components for the 3D sensors for the new iPhone. The report said the iPhone 8’s release date would be delayed because some key components would not be ready for September. The parts reportedly were being produced by STMicroelectronics in a factory in France.

The iPhone 8 is rumored to come with edge-to-edge OLED display. It was previously rumored Samsung would supply Apple with OLED panels. Apple and Samsung reportedly signed a $9 billion, two-year contract for OLED displays.

It was also rumored the iPhone 8 would come with a dual-camera system on the back of the device, which will be placed vertically, unlike the camera system on the iPhone 7 Plus, which is placed horizontally.
The 10th anniversary iPhone is also expected to feature an embedded Touch ID, wireless charging and a True Tone display, which automatically adjusts the color and intensity of the device’s display depending on the environment.
The iPhone 8 is expected to be revealed in September alongside the iPhone 7S and iPhone 7S Plus, but various reports have pointed to a delayed launch date. Kuo suggested the much-anticipated device will face "severe supply shortages" when released.
The iPhone 8 is rumored to have a price tag exceeding $1,000.
