Ireland Baldwin and her mom, Kim Basinger, are opening up about the "challenges" they've had with Alec Baldwin over the years.
The mother and daughter joined Jada Pinkett Smith on Wednesday's episode of Facebook Watch's "Red Table Talk." During the chat, Basinger discussed her split from Alec and how it affected their 26-year-old daughter.
Basinger said that she and Alec "went through a heavy-duty, very out loud when you're in the public, divorce," and Ireland "had to go through that very rough time."
When Pinkett Smith asked Basinger about co-parenting Ireland with Alec amid the model's struggles with anxiety, the latter revealed that she and her ex didn't see "eye to eye."
"We're all fine and we all get along, whatever. But he's been — but he's a challenge," the 68-year-old actress was quoted by People as saying. "I mean, come on. We've had our challenges. I don’t think Alec was emotionally or mentally available for that kind of talk. Alec, you know, operates in a very different way in his life."
While Ireland believes her father also deals with anxiety, she's convinced that Alec's upbringing made it difficult for the actor to tap into his emotions, describing him as "someone who grew up in a family that would suppress that as well. Or tell him he's weak for feeling that way."
She continued: "There [are] things I would go to my father for, but if I ever even try to have this conversation in any way with him, I don't think he would be able to really absorb any of it."
Basinger and Alec were married from 1993 to 2002. They split when Ireland was just 7 years old and were embroiled in a years-long custody battle over their daughter.
The Oscar-winning actress also spoke about her and Alec's divorce and how she raised their child on her own during a 2016 interview with The Edit by Net-A-Porter.
"Divorce is hard on a kid, no matter how you cut it. And ours was very public and nasty," Basinger said. "So I brought up Ireland in a very unconventional way. I just wanted her to be free. If she wanted to have her friends over and write over the walls with pen, that was fine. ... I wanted her childhood to be full of love and light and animals and friends."
She also told the outlet that she and Alec have since moved on and are on better terms, explaining, "Life goes on."
In March, Alec and his wife Hilaria Baldwin announced on Instagram that they are expecting their seventh child together.
At the time, Ireland spoke up in support of her father via Instagram after receiving "countless messages from people who are kind of alarmingly obsessed with my father and his family."
"I think a lot of people assume my take on any of this, well here it is for free — it's none of my business. … I don't care. I smoke weed, I eat good food and I mind MY own business," she wrote.
Ireland and Basinger's episode of "Red Table Talk" is streaming now on Facebook Watch.
