- Musk's SpaceX fired nine employees in June
Tech billionaire Elon Musk has been the center of criticism lately after firing Twitter employees but it looks like the new CEO of the popular microblogging site has done the same in the past, at the time, it involved nine SpaceX employees.
Nine SpaceX employees who reportedly organized an open letter condemning Musk's behavior on Twitter were sacked from Musk's space manufacturing, exploration and satellite communications company SpaceX, according to The New York Times.
The report claimed that several SpaceX employees urged the company to denounce the tech billionaire's "harmful" behavior on the social media platform through a letter they circulated on June 15. "Elon's behavior in the public sphere is a frequent source of distraction and embarrassment for us, particularly in recent weeks," employees wrote in the letter that circulated in June.
It also suggested that SpaceX must "separate itself from Elon's personal brand" and must ensure that the CEO's messaging "does not reflect our work, our mission, or our values." The said letter surfaced after Musk made jokes on Twitter about an alleged sexual harassment complaint against him, which was reportedly settled.
On June 16, the day after the letter was shared, SpaceX sacked the employees who started it. On the same day, 20 engineers attended a meeting presided over by the company's Vice President Jon Edwards.
The executive reportedly said the employees behind the letter had been fired for criticizing the CEO and creating a distraction within the company. According to a couple of employees that shared the story, Edwards told the attendees that "SpaceX is Elon and Elon is SpaceX."
At the time, it was unclear how many employees were fired with Reuters reporting that at least five employees were removed from the company, citing a couple of sources. However, it appears that a total of nine employees were sacked because of the letter, as per The NYT, which cited lawyers and workers.
The report also claimed that eight out of the nine fired SpaceX employees filed a complaint at the National Labor Relations Board on Wednesday, November 16, alleging unfair labor practices and noting that firing the workers is against the company's law.
Meanwhile, Musk is reportedly calling for anyone left on twitter who can write software to talk to him and help him "better understand" the social media platform's technology via a set of emails sent around midnight on Friday. The emails happened following the mass resignation of Twitter employees on Thursday, which is their response to the new CEO's challengeto work for the "extremely hardcore" version of "Twitter 2.0."
