According to the latest reports, iH8Sn0w has just recently updated the Sn0wBreeze Jailbreaking tool to version 2.9.2 for Windows to jailbreak the iOS 5.1 firmware tethered. The process involved here is somewhat different from the previous jailbreak steps that were used to jailbreak the iPhone, iPad and the iPod Touch. The reason for this is because Sn0wBreeze creates a custom IPSW (firmware file) that has to be restored to the iOS device before the jailbreak process starts.

Although you will lose the content that is currently on your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad, it will present the user with the ability to customize every aspect of the jailbreak and allow users to update to the iOS 5.1 firmware without updating the baseband.

However, it should be noted that Sn0wBreeze does not support jailbreaking the iPhone 4S or iPad 2 (A5 devices).

Here are the steps to Jailbreak iOS 5.1 with Sn0wBreeze v2.9.2

Step 1: First, download Sn0wBreeze v2.9.2 from the link given below the tutorial steps.

Step 2: Once the downloading is done, extract the version of Sn0wBreeze to your desktop.

Step 3: Next, launch Sn0wBreeze by clicking on the “sn0wbreeze-v2.9.2.exe” file. (Here you will need to grant Sn0wBreeze the administrative privileges).

Step 4: When launched, a few pop-up windows will appear. Go through them once and then click on OK button. The next screen will describe the jailbreaking tool for you and you need to click on the blue arrow to the right-hand bottom of the screen.

Step 5: Next, click the browse button and select the iOS 5.1 firmware that you are attempting to jailbreak from the next screen. After Sn0wBreeze has detected the firmware, you will get a notification that it has been successfully identified. Again click on the blue arrow at the bottom of the screen.

Step 6: The next screen will provide you with four different options called iFaith Mode, Simple Mode, Expert Mode and Baseband Preservation Mode. The “iFaith mode” allows you to create a custom ipsw that will contain previously saved SHSH blobs, which are useful when downgrading. The “Simple Mode” will create a custom iOS 5.1 IPSW automatically without selecting any customization options. The “Expert Mode” will provide options for customizing the Jailbreak before creating a custom iOS 5.1 IPSW. The “Baseband Preservation Mode,” however, is only useful if you want to upgrade to the latest iOS 5.1 firmware without updating the baseband and without Jailbreaking the iPhone. Select the “Expert Mode” here. (Remember that Sn0wBreeze will never update an iPhone’s baseband regardless of any chosen mode.

Step 7: The next screen commences the customization process and you will need to click the “General” button and then the same blue arrow.

Step 8: Once the “General” screen opens, you are free to use a variety of options to customize the jailbreak. The options include Enable Battery-Percentage, Activate The iPhone [Hacktivate], Install SSH and Root Partition Size. The “Enable Battery-Percentage” option allows you to add a small percentage number next to your battery icon in the status bar. The “Activate The iPhone [Hacktivate]” option will activate you phone if it is unlocked. The “Install SSH” option lets you install an SSH service and allows you to view your device’s file-system. The “Root Partition Size” option will change the size allocated to Jailbroken apps.

Just select the options you wish to apply and click on the blue arrow.

Step 9: The next screen allows you to pre-install 3rd party applications or tweaks. find the applications and tweaks you are wanting to install and select them if you wish to do it. Once you are happy with your selection click the blue arrow to continue.

Step 10: This will now again bring you back to the Customization Home again. Now select the “Build IPSW” option and click the blue arrow to continue the IPSW creation process.

Step 11: Sn0wBreeze will now create the custom IPSW with the selected options. This process can take as much as 30 minutes (it will depend on the speed of the computer). The firmware file will be located on your desktop once it is created.

Step 12: After the custom IPSW has been created, you will need to put your device into DFU mode. To start, click on the OK button. After this you will need to follow Sn0wBreeze’s real-time DFU mode instructions. Now the device will be in DFU mode and you can also restore your custom IPSW firmware file.

Step 13: After following Sn0wBreeze’s real-time instructions as described, iTunes should launch saying iReb is successfully running, and you can go back to iTunes and click the restore button. Once you have done this, you can now select your custom IPSW firmware file, which is located on your desktop, to restore to your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad.

Step 14: You will need to boot your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad after it finishes restoring using a tool developed by iH8Sn0w called iBooty. Now anytime you need to restart your iDevice you will need use this tool. (Note that iBooty will be extracted to your desktop once you have created a custom iOS 5.1 firmware file through Sn0wBreeze v2.9.2.). After the iBooty folder appears on your desktop, just click on it to open and launch by clicking on the “iBooty.exe” button.

Step 15: Now just select your device from the drop down list and click on start button once selected. There will be on-screen instruction at this point for putting the device into DFU mode and the device shall boot in a jailbroken state.
