Jamie Dornan Praises ‘Funny’ Dakota Johnson, Dishes On ‘Fifty Shades Darker’ And ‘Freed’ Sequels
Jamie Dornan has wrapped the final “Fifty Shades” films but he remembers his experience creating the two sequels fondly. Fresh off production on the E.L. James romance movies, Dornan dished about his experience while promoting “Anthropoid” Friday.
According to the Irish film star, shooting “Fifty Shades Darker” and “Fifty Shades Freed” simultaneously allowed for the energy on set to be kept afloat. “It was the right way to do it,” Dornan said on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” “A lot of energy goes into them and if you can do two in one, I think it makes sense for everyone.”
While Dornan was at a loss for words when asked what he’ll miss most about his “Fifty Shades” character Christian Grey, a domineering BDSM practicing billionaire, he had nothing but kind words to say about his on-screen love interest, co-star Dakota Johnson. The 34-year-old called the Ana Steele actress “funny” and admitted the entire experience was made better by her presence.
“We have a lot of fun together. Dakota’s funny and we’ve been through this mad sort of journey together and I’m very thankful that I’ve done it with someone who is easy to do it with,” Dornan said. “It could have been a very different experience had we not got on.”
While “Fifty Shades” fans have six months until the first sequel, “Darker,” is released, Dornan’s supporters can see “Anthropoid” in theaters Aug. 12. The biographical thriller, which is based on the true story of Operation Anthropoid during WWII, stars Dornan as Jan Kubiš and Cillian Murphy as Jozef Gabcík.
“As you an actor you do just want to mix it up,” Dornan told “GMA” host Lara Spencer of his decision to sign on for the war film. “You don’t want to be typecast. That was definitely a part of it.”
“Darker” and “Freed” wrapped last month with the final scenes for the franchise shot in Paris. James, film producer and the creator of “Fifty Shades of Grey,” appeared pleased by one of the last sequences. Hours before filming concluded, she shared a set photo of Johnson and Dornan’s character’s on their honeymoon, calling it “gorgeous.”
“Darker” will see the introduction of new characters. Christian’s former lover turned business partner Elena Lincoln, best known by fans as Mrs. Robinson, will make her debut. First mentioned by Johnson’s character in 2015’s “Fifty Shades of Grey,” fans will get to see actress Kim Basinger play the villain on screen in 2017. The final film, “Freed,” will be released in February 2018.
