‘Jane The Virgin’ Season 4 Spoilers: Gina Rodriguez Defends New TV Son
Not a lot of people were happy to see the new photos of “Jane the Virgin” Season 4, which showed a different actor playing Jane’s (Gina Rodriguez) son, Mateo.
Rodriguez shared the photo on her Instagram, and said the actor playing the new older Mateo is just “pure love.” Sadly, not everybody was happy to see the new face - as cute as he might be.
“The thing is they’re like the same age I don’t understand why they swapped him out - also all of these Mateos are SO different from each other in no world would that last boy get two years older and look like this boy,” a fan commented.
The same thing happened on Twitter, where the hashtag #NotMyMateo was even started.
Rodriguez got so upset when she saw these negative comments that she called them out and told “Jane the Virgin” fans to stop bullying the five-year-old actor.
Aside from this change, a lot of fans were also heartbroken to learn that Season 4 will not have as many episodes as previous ones. Seasons 1 and 2 have 22 episodes each, while Season 3 has 20 episodes. According to TV Line, Season 4 will only have 17 episodes.
Sources say that the decision to trim down the number was made by executive producer Jennie Snyder Urman, who earlier lamented about their “gruelling” production schedule. “I think six [is perfect] for us,” she said. “I could knock out six excellent episodes.”
Hopefully, the introduction of a new and exciting character, Adam (Tyler Posey), hopes to make up for it. Adam is Jane’s first love, and the show will delve more into her backstory and discover why Jane thought she would never see him again.
“He’s an illustrator of comic books and graphic novels,” Urman told Entertainment Weekly of Adam. “He’s the same age as [Jane], but their lives have gone in such drastically different paths that it feels like they’re almost living different lives.”
Urman further described Adam as a “fly-by-the-seat-of-his-pants kind of guy,” and dating him would feel very new to Jane even though they already know each other. “Jane’s never dated an artist since she’s decided that she was an artist, so they connect on an artistic level and he just has a different approach to life than she does. I think that will be fun to see how Jane fits into his world,” she said.
“Jane the Virgin” Season 4 will return to the CW on Oct. 13 at 9 p.m. EDT.
