‘Jane The Virgin’ Star Justin Baldoni Talks ‘Zen’ Rafael, Dishes On His New Girlfriend Abby Whitman

People change in prison, and after Rafael Solano (Justin Baldoni) went to jail, he came out a more “zen” human being.

Rafael’s drastic change is something that was explored in “Jane the Virgin” Chapter Fifty-Five. He grew a beard, let his former wife Petra Solano (Yael Grobglas) take charge of the hotel business and even had a new girlfriend in tow.

Baldoni told Entertainment Tonight that it was fun changing his character midseason, but he teased that “zen Rafael” might not last long, given the shocking twists awaiting the characters. “The behavior’s different, the reactions are different and we’ll see how long that lasts because after all, it is ‘Jane the Virgin,’” he said.

People are also curious about his new girlfriend, Abby Whitman (Minka Kelly). Rafael and Abby, a greeting card designer, have been going out for one year already, but who is she really?

Baldoni said that fans will get to know more about Abby in the next few episodes. “The Abby character is hilarious and you’ll see where it’s going in a few episodes. It’s a very fun story and it’s interesting to see what happens between her and Rafael, and the dynamic between the two baby mamas,” he said.

Some fans were actually hoping that Jane Gloriana Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez) would rekindle her romance with Rafael after Michael’s death, but it seems like fans will have to wait a while to see Jane moving on with a new man.

However, Rodriguez said people should not lose hope about this happening. “It’s a telenovela, c’mon, you know that,” Rodriguez said, according to Bustle. “There’s gonna be a lot of triangles, a lot of love. A lot of messiness and redemption and all the things we go through on a daily basis. Lots.”
