Jason Russell, Creator Of Kony 2012, To Be Released From Mental Hospital, Suffered 'Extreme Exhaustion And Dehydration' [VIDEO]
The wife of Jason Russell, creator and director of the Kony 2012 video, said her husband was suffering from extreme exhaustion and dehydration when he was taken into custody by San Diego police, while a representative for Invisible Children said he will be released from the mental hospital soon.
In a statement, Danica Russell defended her husband and said his bizarre meltdown was not due to drugs or alcohol.
Jason has never had a substance abuse or drinking problem, and this episode wasn't caused by either of those things, she wrote, reported Yahoo. But yes, he did some irrational things brought on by extreme exhaustion.
She suspects her husband's strange behavior, dancing and ranting naked on a street corner, was due in part to criticisms against Invisible Children and his film, Kony 2012.
Because of how personal the film is, many of the attacks against it were also very personal, and Jason took them very hard, said the statement, according to the Los Angeles Times. Jason has dedicated his adult life to this cause, leading to KONY 2012. We thought a few thousand people would see the film, but in less than a week, millions of people around the world saw it.
The filmmaker was taken into custody by police after appearing naked on the streets of San Diego. He was reportedly interfering with traffic, banging his hands on the sidewalks and yelling at pedestrians as people tried to calm him down.
Several callers called the police department to report the bizarre behavior from a gentleman, white male, age 33, who lived in the Pacific Beach area, San Diego police spokeswoman Lt. Andra Brown said, according to Yahoo News. Callers said he was running through the street in his underwear. Someone said he was naked and masturbating. Officers could not confirm that.
Russell was taken to a mental health facility and is expected to be released soon, said a spokeswoman for Invisible Children, according to Yahoo.
Immediately after the incident, the chief executive of Invisible Children released a statement.
Jason Russell was unfortunately hospitalized yesterday suffering from exhaustion, dehydration and malnutrition, Ben Keesey said in a separate statement Friday, according to Yahoo. He is now receiving medical care and is focused on getting better. The past two weeks have taken a severe emotional toll on all of us, Jason especially, and that toll manifested itself in an unfortunate incident yesterday.
