Jazz Jennings has opened up about her struggles with binge eating disorder and weight gain.
The "I Am Jazz" star took to Instagram Friday to share old and current photos of herself. She accompanied the images with a lengthy caption addressing the "substantial amount of weight" she had gained in the last few years.
"I suffer from binge-eating disorder, a disease in which I’m not only addicted to food, but I eat it in large quantities," the 20-year-old reality star and trans activist explained in her post. "My binging, along with an increased appetite I experience from some of the meds I’m on, has caused me to gain almost 100 pounds in a little less than 2 years."
The TLC star went on to share that she wanted to "hold myself accountable."
"I’m ready to change my ways; I’ve been saying I’m ready to turn over a new leaf, but I’m running out of trees now. I’m ready to take the initiative and create positive changes when it comes to my health and body," Jennings wrote.
Jennings said she has the support of a "fabulous team" that includes family, friends and professionals. But she also recognized the fact that "I have to be the one committed toward bettering myself."
"I know I have the power in me to lose the weight, and I intend on sharing my progress with all of you. Love you all, and thanks for understanding the battle I’m fighting to win," she concluded her post.
Binge eating disorder is a "severe, life-threatening, and treatable eating disorder" and the most common eating disorder in the U.S., according to the National Eating Disorder Association.
Jennings' family, friends and followers sent her messages of support and encouragement in the comments. Some said they could relate to her and offered their help.
"Love and support you," commented her brother Griffen. "You are so resilient and can do anything you put your mind too [sic]," wrote her other brother Sander. "I believe in you and will be by your side every step of the way."
"Deciding you’re gonna do it and believing it is so important!" wrote Perez Hilton, while Katie Couric said, "Sending you love and support Jazz. We are cheering you on!"
"Jazz, I sat alongside you at the VS panel. I too suffered from binge eating disorder but am now fully recovered. Please reach out id you need a friend who’s been through it :) thanks for sharing with us! You are so awesome," Victoria Garrick wrote.
"I love you, Jazz. We are here to support you always," Raymond Braun added.
"love and support always sweetheart," Dominique T.A.R. Jackson wrote.
Jennings later took to her Instagram Story to thank those who expressed their support for her post, writing, "Thank you all for the positivity and love. I'm so touched by all of the support!"
Jennings' reality show "I Am Jazz" was renewed for Season 7 by TLC earlier this month, Variety reported.
