Jennie Garth Recalls Being Put In Animal Cage With Luke Perry To Escape '90210' Fans

Jennie Garth got candid about some surreal moments she encountered as a celebrity and recalled the time she was convinced that she was already popular.

Garth and Tori Spelling appeared on this week's "People in the '90s" podcast. During the conversation, Garth recounted the time she and her late co-star Luke Perry were put inside an animal cage in a zoo in Fresno, California, on Earth Day in 1991 to escape the passionate fans of their hit show "90210."

"And it sort of summed it up for me because I felt like a zoo animal," Garth told hosts Jason Sheeler and Andrea Lavinthal.

"It was just weird. And then it got too crazy, and people were rushing the zoo cages. And we had to go out through one of the enclosures of the animals - I don't remember, the monkeys or something - but I just remember them actually putting us in a cage at the zoo. And I was like, 'This feels good.'"

Garth considered that "one of the pivotal moments" where she realized that she had become famous. Meanwhile, Spelling recalled how the girls went crazy for their male co-stars Perry, Brian Austin Green, Jason Priestley and Ian Ziering.

"I guess when everyone started fanning out over us, mostly we remember the boys, they would go crazy for the boys," Spelling said. "And we were like, 'They're dreamy, but we are with them every day.' So it was very different to see how girls would freak out."

In the podcast, both Spelling and Garth flipped through the pages of People's Sept. 9, 1991 issue which featured the cast of "Beverly Hills, 90210" as the "TV's Hottest Teens." In the issue, the cast members talked about their onscreen and offscreen friendship.

"The whole thing is a little bit of a blur," Spelling said. "We were in our late teens and then friends started going off to college and going to parties and we just lived it on TV. And it was like, we were working really, really hard, but I think it was great. It really set us up for life. We're super driven because of it."

Meanwhile, Jessica Alba previously claimed that when she made an appearance on "90210," she was advised to not make eye contact with her more popular co-stars on set.

Christine Elise slammed Alba for her claims saying, "That cast is very nice and if they don’t like you, they go away." Director Joel Feigenbaum also said he was not aware of Alba's concern at the time.

"I had not [heard that rule about no eye contact]. I had not, but I’m not saying … it’s very possible someone could have said that to her, either seriously or not," Feigenbaum said.
