Jessica Morris Dishes On Amazon’s ‘Ladies Of The Lake’ And How She’d Return To ‘One Life To Live’
There’s one very big message Jessica Morris wants to make sure viewers of Amazon’s newest mini-series, “Ladies of the Lake,” take away from the show: Stick together with your girlfriends, but maybe don’t kill your husbands.
Morris, who stars on the new show, told International Business Times that while some fans may not quite like the titular “Ladies” because of the extreme actions they take, she hopes they do also get that there is a sense of female empowerment in the series, which she thinks is the bigger takeaway.
“I hope that they’re [viewers] not too upset about what me and the other girls’ characters do in the series, because I think that it was written and shot in a way where we’re still likable, and we’re justified in the kind of horrendous things we do,” she told IBT. “So I really hope that they take away that female empowerment kind of feeling, like ‘Women stick together, don’t let men brings us down.’ But without maybe some of the criminal activities, like, don’t do this at home!”
The show, which debuts on Amazon on May 15, is based off a novel of the same name that was written by “Days of Our Lives” producer Ken Corday. It follows the story of four rich and powerful women in the gated community of Avalon who all have husbands who just happen to be murdered. Starring Morris, who portrayed Jennifer Rappaport on “One Life to Live” from 1999-2008, the series also features several other familiar faces from soap operas as well, including Martha Madison (Belle, “Days of Our Lives”), Lilly Melgar (ex-Lily, “General Hospital”), Marie Wilson (ex-Summer/Bree, “Days of Our Lives”), Kyle Lowder (ex-Brady, “Days of Our Lives”) and Arianne Zucker (Nicole, “Days of Our Lives”).
Morris plays Crystal Amhurst, a barren trophy wife to the unfaithful Jonathan (“Days” alum John-Paul Lavoisier). Crystal tries every way she can to get her husband’s attention, but he continues to virtually ignore her, which eventually leads to her taking extreme action. However, Morris swears that even though Crystal is guilty of committing murder, it’s something that happens purely by accident.
“She didn’t mean to!” She laughed, explaining that her character commits murder during a “fit of passion.” “She’s just so upset, you know, you can only take so much!”
But even though she may not mean to do something so extreme at first, she eventually starts exhibiting even more wild behaviors to make sure she and her friends don’t get caught. One way she plans to do that? Seducing Detective Shawn Daniels (Lowder) as he looks into the crimes.
“She’s smart enough to start dating the detective who’s investigating the cases,” she said. “You can’t go wrong with that, because you know, if I’ve got the detective in my bed, he’s not going to turn me in!”

Morris also revealed to IBT that working on the show has led to her former role from “One Life To Live” being brought up more often, and though the series is now defunct on ABC, she has some good ideas about ways her character (who was killed off the original show) could re-enter the canvas there if it were revived again.
“I think we saw her dead body actually lying there, but we don’t know if she has a twin sister or not. She could,” she teased. “So if there was a twin sister who maybe made better decisions than Jen did, it would be nice to portray her... Maybe I’m one of Jen’s stalkers and I had my face surgically remade to look just like her!”
Of course, no second revival of “One Life To Live” appears to be in the works these days. But if fans who miss Morris from that show want to see more of her, they can tune in to “Ladies of the Lake,” which will be available in its entirety on Amazon May 15.
