Joe Manganiello Revisits Deathstroke Rebuff And The Snyder Cut Controversy
Fans have long awaited the potential release of Zack Snyder’s own version of the “Justice League" movie, coined by the internet as the “Snyder Cut.” Emulating the Holy Grail in its unknown dimensions and highly secretive nature, said Snyder Cut remains in existence by way of perpetual dialogue and endless teases from Snyder himself and the many stars of 2017’s “Justice League,” yet no word on a release has ever been hinted at.
Appearing only in the final moments of the film, Joe Manganiello portrays a rugged mercenary by the name of Slade Wilson, otherwise known as Deathstroke. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Manganiello underscores the power of the fandom and the nature of Snyder’s still unreleased version of a superhero flick.
In regards to the major push for the director’s cut, which populated social media as #ReleaseTheSnyderCut in November with a variety of stars supporting the cause, from Gal Gadot and Ben Affleck to Jason Momoa and Manganiello himself, the Deathstroke actor admits that it’s still a sour subject.
“I honestly wanted to stop talking about it. I really don’t like talking about things that didn’t happen.” He added, “I have a ton of photos from the set photographer that were never going to be released that were sitting on my computer. One day I thought, if I don’t put them out now they’re never going to come out. I might as well get them out to the public.”
Snyder first directed “Justice League” until he stepped down after his daughter's death, which led him to hand the film off to “Avengers” director Joss Whedon. Due to the rather poor reception of “Justice League,” Manganiello’s version of Deathstroke was no sooner forgotten, despite potential appearances in a variety of other forthcoming films, main among them being a standalone Deathstroke feature and another Affleck-led Batman flick, none of which ever made it to the big screen.
“Because of the cancellation of ‘Batman’ and the various other projects that my character was going to be in, I never got to release them,” he explained.
Snyder himself has admitted to the existence of the so-called Snyder Cut, but it’s unclear if fans can ever expect to see it. Though, some hopeful individuals believe that it somehow could appear on AT&T’s upcoming streaming platform, HBO Max, as an incentive to buy into the service, though that remains an unconfirmed rumor at best.
