Johnny Depp-Amber Heard Divorce Updates: Depp Rejects Heard’s Request For Spousal Support
Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s divorce drama has already started. The Hollywood actor has reportedly rejected Heard’s request for spousal support.
Hollywood has been abuzz with news of Heard filing for divorce from the “Alice Through the Looking Glass” star. Previous reports have stated that the model has filed the divorce papers in Los Angeles and indicated a need for spousal support from Depp. However, the actor is said to be fighting his estranged wife’s request. Depp reportedly asked a judge not to grant Heard’s spousal support claim, according to Hello magazine.
Depp is said to have hired lawyer Laura Wasser who has handled many Hollywood divorce cases. Some of her previous clients included Kim Kardashian who split from former husband Kris Humphries, Denise Richards, Nick Lachey, Christina Aguilera and Angelina Jolie, as stated in the same report. Wasser also represented Britney Spears in the singer’s 2006 child welfare case. The famed lawyer also prepared Spears’ pre-nuptial agreement with Kevin Federline.
Meanwhile, it is still unclear how Depp and Heard’s joint assets will be split following their divorce. The two celebrities’ divorce filing is covered by California law that follows a 50-50 rule in splitting communal properties acquired during the marriage, E!News reported. The model also stands to gain financially from the divorce since she and Depp did not sign a pre-nuptial agreement prior the wedding.
The “Pirates of the Caribbean” star has received huge paychecks from previous projects such as the “Alice in Wonderland” movie franchise. Depp has also a few product endorsements under his belt such as Dior’s fragrance line for men, Sauvage. The Hollywood actor also has several real estate properties, as well as an island in the Bahamas.
At this point, it is also unsure if the court will allow Heard’s request for spousal support following California law. Typically, a judge will be able to grant the spousal support request if the California couple was married for at least 10 years, as stated in the same report. Given Depp and Heard’s less than two years marriage, this ruling may help the actor fight the model’s spousal support claim.
Depp and Heard tied the knot in February 2015. The two celebrities were together for 15 months prior the split.
