  • Stephen Dorff opened up about his experience working with Johnny Depp in 2009's "Public Enemy"
  • He described the embattled star as a "great guy" and a "stand-up legend"
  • This came weeks after Depp lost his libel case against British tabloid The Sun

Actor Stephen Dorff recalled having a great experience working with Johnny Depp, who recently lost a legal battle against a tabloid that referred to him as a “wife-beater.”

Dorff and Depp worked together in the 2009 action film “Public Enemy,” where they played Homer Van Meter and John Dillinger, respectively. Looking back at their time together on set, Dorff has nothing but praise for the embattled star, whom he described as a “great guy.”

“He was a stand-up legend to me. … He was somebody who was generous, was friendly and giving to me, at a time when I’d just lost my mom and I was probably in the most vulnerable state I’d ever been in my life,” Dorff told Page Six.

“I got to act with one of my heroes as an actor and one of my heroes as a director [Michael Mann],” he added.

While Dorff spoke about working with Depp, he did not comment on his former co-star's libel case and was tight-lipped about the accusations made against him by his ex-wife, Amber Heard.

Dorff only said that it’s “a shame” that people's lives have been splashed across newspapers. He added that he is hoping for “some healing” for the former lovers because “the truth is the guy is a great guy and was great to me.”

This came a few weeks after Depp lost his libel case against British tabloid The Sun over an article that called him a wife-beater, referring to Heard’s allegations that he was physically abusive toward her when they were married. Following the judge's verdict earlier this month, the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star was let go from the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise.

“I wish to let you know that I have been asked to resign by Warner Bros. from my role as Grindelwald in 'Fantastic Beasts' and I have respected and agreed to that request,” Depp informed his followers on Instagram.

His announcement sparked outrage among fans, with some signing a petition calling for the replacement of Heard in “Aquaman.”

Despite losing the role of Gellert Grindelwald, Depp will still be paid millions of dollars just for filming one scene in “Fantastic Beasts 3.”
