Friday marks the fourth death anniversary of prolific Mexican singer-songwriter Alberto Aguilera Valadez, known professionally as Juan Gabriel. He who died in 2016 at the age of 66.

Gabriel was on a tour in the United States and died of natural causes hours before he was scheduled to perform in El Paso, Texas.

"He has passed on to become part of eternity and has left us his legacy through Juan Gabriel, the character created by him for all the music that has been sung and performed all around the world," his media office announced his death in a statement at the time, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Former Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto had offered condolences at the time, saying, "We lament the death of Juan Gabriel, one of the biggest musical icons of our country. My condolences to his family and friends. A voice and a talent that represented Mexico. His music is a legacy to the world. He left us too soon. May he rest in peace."

Gabriel sold three million albums in the U.S. over his illustrious career which spanned nearly five decades. He also won several accolades for his music. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was also inducted into the Billboard Latin Music Hall of Fame. Some of his greatest hits include "Asi Fue," "Querida," "Amor Eterno,” "Hasta Que Te Conoci" and "Abrazame Muy Fuerte."

A biography published by Mexico's Society of Music Authors and Composers quoted the singer as saying, "There are no rules when I compose songs. There are times when I'm really happy and I write something really sad, and vice versa."
