Kansas 'UFO' Sighting? Meet the Northrop Grumman X-47B [PHOTOS]
Those living in Crowley County, Kansas who thought they saw a UFO being hauled by a flatbed truck couldn't have been further from the scientific truth.
According to reports, some residents shot video of the unidentified flying object that riled up more residents. The video captured the military towing the concealed object on a flatbed truck down US Highway 77. The structure of the object seemed to give it a saucer-like appearance similar to the alien spaceship we've all imagined over time. Additionally, the object was 30 feet wide, so large that local law enforcement had to take down roadside signage just so the truck could pass through.
However, the object turned out to be just an unmanned military combat drone called an X-47B, which is designed to operate from aircraft carriers. Local sheriff Don Read wittily told Life's Little Mysteries that the tarp was in fact covering a flying object, but not an alien one-the X-47B was manufactured on Earth by the aerospace company Northrop Grumman.
The X-47B, according to Northrop Grumman's senior manager of public relations Brooks McKinney also spoke to Life's Little Mysteries, said that the drone has a 62-foot wingspan (just over 30 feet with wings folded), is 40 feet long and stands about 10 feet high on three wheels.
And, to put the icing on the cake, McKinney said that the X-47B seen in the video, which is not the only one in existence, was headed to a Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland.
We built two for the Navy, they were being tested at Edwards Air Force Base [in California] since March, said McKinney. One is on its way to Maryland, and the other will remain in California.
Clearly people are interested in what's going through town, McKinney added. It's unusual to see a shrink-wrapped aircraft, especially one with that shape.
Some who watched the video might have asked why the X-47B wasn't simply flown across the country if it was really a military aircraft. McKinney put the idea to bed, too.
It's difficult to fly an unmanned drone through commercial airspace, McKinney explained.
