Karen Gillan Recalls Filming ‘Insane’ ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Scene
“Avengers: Endgame” featured many applause-worthy moments, and one of them was the all-female superhero team-up. An featurette on the home release will give viewers an inside look at the scene.
Marvel Studios released an early look at the Blu-ray bonus feature (via MCU Girl), and it’s clear that all the “Endgame” actresses were excited about the scene during filming.
In the final battle of the box office behemoth, Spider-Man passes the gauntlet to Captain Marvel, and he learns that she’ll have plenty of help keeping it away from Thanos. That’s when the lineup of nearly every active female superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe shows up behind her.
“It was really beautiful to feel this sort of Marvel sisterhood,” Danai Gurira, who plays Okoye, says.
A clip from the day of filming showed Wasp/Hope Van Dyne actress Evangeline Lilly and Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers actress Brie Larson getting some direction from Anthony Russo who explains that the characters “share this connection” even though viewers have never seen Hope and Carol interact before.
“So there’s a connection without ever having met. That’s cool. It’s a really cool thing about the whole battle,” Lilly says.
Nebula actress Karen Gillan was thrilled with the shot too. “That day was insane,” the “Guardians of the Galaxy” star recalled. “We were all in it together and it felt electric. It was really, really cool.”
The scene also featured Gwyneth Paltrow’s character Pepper Potts debuting as Rescue. The actress revealed that while she doesn’t usually watch playback immediately after filming, she did for this particular scene. She hopes young girls will feel inspired by the scene.
The female-focused scene has received some criticism. Marvel Studios didn’t have a solo female headliner until this year’s “Captain Marvel,” and most of these characters had never interacted before. Some felt the moment was forced and hadn’t been fully earned. Still, that didn’t stop many theaters from cheering when they saw the girl power lineup.
The featurette is one of many that will be included on the “Avengers: Endgame” home release. Others will follow the casting of Robert Downey Jr., the evolutions of Captain America and Black Widow as well as a Stan Lee tribute. See the full list of special features.
“Avengers: Endgame” will release on digital platforms on July 30. The movie will be available on Blu-ray, DVD, 4K Ultra HD and OnDemand on Aug. 13.
