Kate Middleton Avoids Handshakes In Public By Doing This Trick
Kate Middleton reportedly avoids doing handshakes in public by doing a subtle trick.
Myka Meier, a royal etiquette expert, told Express that the Duchess of Cambridge holds her bag in front with both her hands when she doesn’t feel like shaking hands with the people around her. The same technique is also often done by Queen Elizabeth II.
Etiquette coach William Hanson added that holding a clutch bag is an excuse to not extend her hand to everyone.
“She can’t shake the hands of everyone she meets – the Duchess would be there all day!” he said.
But Hanson also said that the correct protocol when meeting the Duchess of Cambridge is to not extend a hand in an attempt to shake hers. Middleton should be the first one to reach out if she wants to shake hands with another person.
“Royal protocol states that we should not extend our hand to royalty, but they extend to us – and they may choose not to,” he said.
Meanwhile, royal historian Hugo Vickers previously talked about the Queen’s use of handbags and said that it would be worrying to see Her Majesty move her bag from one hand to the other. The gesture means that the monarch wants to be ushered away from her ongoing conversation.
Her Majesty also reportedly places her handbag on the table to indicate that her staff should already escort her out of her meeting. If the Queen places her handbag on the chair, this means that she is happy with her ongoing conversation.
In related news, Middleton also made headlines this week after she was reportedly seen mimicking Princess Charlotte’s signature wave during her recent outing.
While at the Foundling Museum in London on Tuesday, Middleton did a turn and wave just like what Princess Charlotte usually does when she’s out in public. In the video uploaded on Twitter, Middleton is walking towards the entrance of the museum when she turned around to wave at the crowds.
