They’re happily married now, but that doesn’t mean that Kate Middleton didn’t try to find a way to get back at Prince William for breaking her heart during their 2007 split.

According to Express UK, Middleton successfully convinced her future husband that he would be missing out when she attended a “Freakin’ Naughty” themed party he invited her to at his Army Barracks. Royal author Katie Nicholl recalled that the future Duchess dressed as a sexy nurse for the occasion, and the costume—which featured fishnet tights and a short dress—worked to get Prince William following her all night like a puppy.

The expert reports several partygoers saw the Prince follow her around all night, and that the two were unable to keep their hands off of one another—and it’s wildly believed that the party served as the night that the two got back together for good.

However, while Middleton’s sexy outfit might have caught Prince William’s attention and allowed her to potentially get some revenge for the heartbreak over their split, Nicholl also states that the Prince was already set on reuniting with his former girlfriend, though she wasn’t entirely sure yet if she wanted to give him another chance.

“They secretly met up at Clarence House and at a pub close to Highgrove, where William told her he wanted to get back together,” she said. “Kate didn’t want to rush anything. She had been badly hurt and told William she needed some time.”

Part of Middleton’s concerns about getting back together reportedly came from photos that had surfaced of her former boyfriend partying after they broke up, which led to her reaching out and asking him to consider how his antics were also affecting her reputation.

“She had coped for years with girls flinging themselves at her boyfriend and for a while, she found it humorous and even flattering,” a source said at the time. “But after his recent behavior, she gave him an ultimatum and told him that over the time he behaved like that in public he was cheapening her image as well as his own.”

“She told him she wasn’t prepared to be treated like a doormat and that his carefree behavior was affecting her image,” the source added. “In the past, she had always let go of things like that but this really bothered her.”

She then attended the party, potentially with the intention of testing his commitment to getting back together. She later addressed their split during their engagement interview in 2010, admitting that she had since realized the split was good for them both.

“At the time I wasn’t very happy about it but actually it made me a stronger person,” she admitted at the time. “You find out things about yourself that maybe you hadn’t realized. I think you can get quite consumed by a relationship when you’re younger. I really valued that time, for me as well, although I didn’t think it at the time.”
