Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle have been subjected to double standard headlines.
The Duchess of Cambridge and Duchess of Sussex have received different treatment from the press. One has been slammed while the other has been praised.
Ellie Hall of BuzzFeed News compiled the various headlines involving the two duchesses to see how they were seen by the press differently in the same scenario. For instance, both were seen cradling their baby bumps when they were pregnant, but when Daily Mail wrote for Middleton, the duchess was praised. However, Markle was lambasted when she did the same thing.
“Pregnant Kate tenderly cradles her baby bump while rapping up her royal role duties ahead of maternity leave,” one headline read.
“Why can’t Meghan Markle keep her hand off her bump? Experts tackle the question that has got the nation talking: Is it pride, vanity, acting or a new age bonding technique,” another read.
When Prince William gifted Middleton an avocado, it was deemed a cure for her morning sickness. However, Markle’s fondness for avocado was linked to human rights abuse, drought and millennial shame.
Markle and Middleton also wore one-shoulder gowns at different events and it sparked a “double standard” debate, too. The Duchess of Cambridge wore a white one-shoulder Alexander McQueen gown at the BAFTAs. Many called her “goddess,” “angelic” and “stunning.”
Markle wore a similar dress design at the British Fashion Awards. The Duchess of Sussex donned a one-shoulder black Givenchy gown but was criticized for breaking a royal protocol. Twitter users also noticed the double standard issue between the two royals.
“No hate against the #DutchessOfCambridge, she looked beautiful at the #BAFTAs, but the #DutchessOfSussex received SOOOOOO much hate for ‘breaking protocol’ wearing an off-the-shoulder dress, yet Kate is being praised,” one wrote on Twitter.
In related news, Markle left Middleton broken-hearted with her and Prince Harry’s decision to resign from their royal roles. The Duchess of Cambridge reportedly wanted her children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis to spend more time with their cousin Archie. However, the Sussexes are moving to Canada.
