Kate Middleton and Prince William greeted Meghan Markle on her 39th birthday on social media, but Twitter users have mixed reactions to the Cambridges' gesture.
"Wishing a very happy birthday to The Duchess of Sussex today," the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge wrote on Twitter along with a photo of Markle smiling to a little girl.
However, some found the move hypocritical because they believe that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge fell short in protecting the Duchess of Sussex when she was still with the royal family.
"A bit hypocritical given you can't stand the woman!" one user commented.
"And each time, I am shocked at the degree of your hypocrisy. After everything you've done to her, especially during her pregnancy, you have the nerve to wish her a happy birthday. You are abominably cruel," @PatourArt wrote while sharing photos of Prince William and Middleton with the word "BULLY" written in red color.
"I love you guys, but are you kidding me? Why couldn’t you have been nice to her when she was right on your doorstep? You will be sorry for these missteps in the future. Family first," @jordan_cathleen wrote.
However, more Twitter users approved of Prince William and Middleton’s move because for them, the Cambridges are extending an olive branch to the Sussexes. There are rumors that they are feuding and greeting Markle is a nice gesture from the future king and queen.
"Classy as always," @RoyallyBelle_ wrote with clapping hands emoji.
"Beautiful post. Thank you for honoring this wonderful member of your family," Amanda Ally commented.
"Thanks to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge for continuously trying to keep the family together. Your olive branches are clear to see and people respect you for doing so, despite what some newspapers may say," @fairywings9 added.
Royal expert Katie Nicholl said in a previous interview that Prince William and Prince Harry were already on speaking terms. She noted that Prince Charles reinforced the siblings to reconnect after he tested positive for coronavirus. The Prince of Wales has already recovered.
However, when excerpts from royal correspondents Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand's book "Finding Freedom" about the Sussexes were released, Nicholl said it could be damaging to the royal family.
"This has made the book compelling and fascinating, but for the royal family, this book has been damaging because it has opened up old wounds," Nicholl said.
Meanwhile, a source claimed that Prince William didn't believe Prince Harry and Markle were not involved in the book. The Duke of Cambridge allegedly felt that they were using the book to make themselves look more favorable to the public.
"William thinks the book is their calculated way of controlling the narrative and that they took advantage of their entertainment contacts so they’d be painted in a favorable light" a source told Us Weekly.
