Prince William and Kate Middleton appear to have a solid relationship. Although royal fans know the couple began dating while attending St Andrews University, some are unaware that they built a solid friendship years before their romance began.

During their freshman year, Kate became a major support system for William as he tried to fit in on campus. The Duke of Cambridge wanted a normal college experience, but he had trouble navigating through the sea of girls who wanted his attention.

In the book, “Kate: The Future Queen,” Kate and Prince William’s former classmate, Laura Warshauer, shared details about the couple’s friendship with Katie Nicholl. Laura claimed the pair “had each other’s backs” whenever they attended social gatherings.

During their conversation, Laura shared a clever trick Kate used when she saw other girls flirting with Prince William. “Kate and I were eating brownies. Kate was never a big drinker, she didn’t need alcohol to give her confidence,” she recalled.

“Will was getting really hit on by this girl at the party, and it was getting quite uncomfortable because he couldn’t shake her off. He was being really polite, but this girl just didn’t get the hint.”

Laura revealed Kate came up with a solution and rescued William from the awkward encounter. “All of a sudden, Kate came up behind him and put her arms around him. He said, ‘Oh, sorry, but I’ve got a girlfriend,’ and he and Kate went off giggling,” Laura said.

“Kate was the only girl in the room who could have done that. And that was just a month after we started university.”

Prince William and Kate continued their platonic friendship until Kate broke up with her boyfriend in 2003.

Although they went on to face several obstacles throughout their romance, the two married in 2011. Kate and William are now parents to Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
