Kelly Clarkson Sued By Father-In-Law's Management Firm Over $1 Million Unpaid Commissions

Kelly Clarkson is facing legal charges after her father-in-law Narvel Blackstock's management company sued her for unpaid commissions worth over $1 million

Starstruck Management Group filed a lawsuit against Clarkson on Tuesday and Page Six was able to confirm it through Los Angeles County Superior Court records.

The company is run by Narvel Blackstock, the father of Clarkson's estranged husband Brandon Blacktock, who claims she owes $1.4 million in commissions for her work on "The Voice" and "The Kelly Clarkson Show."

"Over the course of approximately 13 years, Starstruck developed Clarkson into a mega superstar," the complaint was quoted by Variety.

"By way of example only, Starstruck was instrumental in helping Clarkson achieve success in terms of numerous hit albums, multiple Grammy wins and nominations, her role on popular television shows like ‘The Voice’ and her own talk show. Despite Starstruck’s hard work and dedication, Clarkson has decided she is going to stop paying Starstruck for what is contractually owed."

The company has represented the "Because Of You" singer for 13 years and received 15% commission on her gross earnings. The lawsuit stated that Clarkson paid the firm $1.9 million this year but still owes another $1.4 million and at least $5.4 million by the end of the year.

Clarkson and Starstruck do not have a written management agreement. The suit alleged that the terms of their agreement were negotiated verbally by Clarkson's lawyer and business manager in 2007 and the singer-host confirmed the deal over a phone call.

Despite the lack of written contract, the firm stated that it has been paid regular commissions. The company is now alleging breach of oral contract and is seeking declaratory relief and an accounting.

Clarkson recently separated from husband Brandon Blacktock after nearly seven years of marriage. "The Voice" coach filed for divorce on June 4 and cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for their separation. An insider told Us Weekly that the exes couldn't agree on several things and the lockdown heightened their differences.

"They clashed on so many levels and being in quarantine together heightened their problems to the point of no return … so she filed for divorce," the source said. "Everyone thought Kelly and Brandon had the perfect marriage, but they definitely didn’t."
