Kevin Hart has opened up about the details of what happened after his scary car accident and detailed the moment he cried when he reached home from the hospital.
The comedian shared on the “Joe Rogan Experience” podcast how the car accident made him appreciate life more than ever, despite suffering serious injuries in his back. Reflecting on his near-death experience, Hart said he looked at things more differently nowadays and that there are no bad days for him anymore, Entertainment Weekly reported.
“My biggest cry in life came from the first day I came home from the hospital. Because there was an option of me never seeing that house again. There was an option of me never seeing my wife and my kids. I have no reason to be angry because I don’t have to be here,” Hart told the host.
The “Jumanji” star was one of three people aboard his 1970 Plymouth Barracuda traversing Mulholland Drive in Malibu when the driver, Jared Black, lost control of Hart’s car. The ride rolled down an embankment before hitting a tree.
Hart and Black incurred serious back injuries that needed surgery. Rebecca Baxterman, the third passenger and the fiancée of the driver, only sustained minor injuries. Ten days after staying at a hospital, the “Central Intelligence” actor was sent to a rehabilitation facility to recuperate.
While Hart was extremely grateful for his second chance at life, he admitted that things were especially hard during the early stages of his recovery. While he put on a smile for hospital workers, he said it was just a façade to hide the pain he was feeling.
“I lied in the hospital because I didn't want them to know that I was having pain, because I thought that they were gonna stop me from letting me continue to try my walks, ” Hart explained.
During a week’s stay in the hospital, Hart was beginning to walk with the help of a walker, but what the staff didn’t know was that his upper body was doing all the work instead of his feet. Being confined at the facility made him realize what truly matters.
