Khloe Kardashian Slammed By Native American Council For Headdress At 'Kidchella': 'It's Terrible'
Khloe Kardashian has a new controversy on her hands after she wore an “insensitive” Native American headdress to her niece North West’s first birthday party on Saturday. And it wasn’t just any party, it was “Kidchella,” the children’s version of the California music festival Coachella.
The youngest Kardashian sister might have thought it was all harmless fun, but apparently she was wrong. The 29-year-old “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” star posted a picture to Instagram where she sat cross-legged out by a tepee. She captioned the photo: “Ray of clouds. Chirping of birds. Gurgling of water. Granting desire. One with water. #Kidchella my first Coachella!!!”
Kardashian’s fans didn’t seem to have a problem with the image. Nearly 375,000 IG users “liked” the photo.
Half-sister Kylie Jenner also posted a picture with Kardashian wearing the feathered garb.
However, Cliff Matias, the cultural director of the Redhawk Native American Arts Council, spoke to Page Six about Kardashian’s apparent culturally offensive costume choice.
“It’s terrible,” he said. “It’s absolutely terrible that they have no conscience to discontinue to do such things. I just can’t believe she would be that insensitive to think it was OK to wear that war bonnet at a kids’ party … Now you have a celebrity at a kids’ party creating a whole new generation of insensitive thinking.”
Matias referenced recent “creative” choices made by other celebrities and referred to it as an “on-going” problem. Most recently, Pharrell Williams wore a feather headdress for the cover of Elle UK’s July Issue. The “Happy” singer apologized for the Doug Inglish photographed shoot.
“There’s no way she’s not in tune with what’s been happening in the media,” Matias continued. “I can’t even say she’s not even aware. But it’s also sad. It’s really sad that people who are celebrities don’t take the responsibility and the understanding that they are trendsetters and they influence people, especially young people. It’s a responsibility that I don’t think a lot of them acknowledge that they have.”
Kardashian has not publicly addressed the alleged controversy.
