Krispy Kreme Doughnuts is bringing back its annual “Day of the Dozens” event two weeks before the Christmas holiday.
The American doughnut company on Tuesday announced the holiday event on their Twitter page.
“DAY of the DOZENS is coming! Get an Original Glazed dozen for $1 w/any full-priced dozen! The season's sweetest Saturday will be 12/12. Participating US & CAN shops 12/12 only. Not valid online. Not used w/other offers. While supplies last,” the tweet read.
Customers who purchase any dozen doughnuts at regular price on Dec. 12 will be eligible to buy a dozen Original Glazed doughnuts for just $1.
Limited-time Holiday Collection doughnuts are included in the 12/12 offer, which means customers can get a dozen of the new Christmas-inspired Festive Tree and Present doughnuts and the famous Santa Belly Doughnut, USA Today reported.
Customers are limited to two deals. The offer is not valid for online ordering. Shops in Times Square, Connecticut and Puerto Rico will not offer the “Day of the Dozens” promo. Krispy Kreme’s 12/12 offer does not include Mini Doughnuts. It is also not valid with other offers or coupons.
A list of participating locations, including shops in Canada, is available on the Krispy Kreme website.
The American doughnut and coffeehouse chain was founded by Vernon Rudolph in 1933 when he met a French chef in New Orleans and purchased “a secret yeast-raised doughnut recipe,” according to the North Carolina Museum of History.
Rudolph, who was working at a general store in Kentucky during the Great Depression, headed to Tennessee, where he and his uncle Ishmael Armstrong began selling doughnuts in 1934.
The store's success encouraged Rudolph to open the first-ever “Krispy Kreme Doughnuts” store in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on July 13, 1937. The demand led him to sell the doughnuts on the sidewalk through a window, and eventually more stores.
The special donut recipe Rudolph bought from the unidentified French chef has been locked away in a vault at Krispy Kreme’s Winston-Salem plant. While there are many speculations about the recipe, historians believe the beloved doughnuts are made of fluffed egg whites, potatoes, sugar, shortening, milk and flour, Delish reported.
