KEY POINTS
- Kristen Stewart will play Princess Diana in "Spencer"
- Director Pablo Larrain said the "Twilight" star can be many things
- The story will revolve around Princess Diana's decision to leave Prince Charles and her future as queen
Kristen Stewart will assess the role of Princess Diana in the upcoming film “Spencer.” The film will revolve around the Princess of Wales' days after she realized it was over between her and Prince Charles.
According to The Wrap, Pablo Larrain will helm the film and will co-produce along with Janine Jackowski, Paul Webster, Jonas Dornbach and Juan de Dios Larrain. Steven Knight penned the script of the film. Production will reportedly begin sometime next year.
The movie will take place three days after Princess Diana decided to turn her back on the British royal family after realizing she wanted to leave her other half, the Prince of Wales. This happened at the Sandringham Estate during a Christmas vacation.
Princess Diana’s controversial decision to throw away a future as queen particularly intrigued the director, who said he grew up reading and understanding fairytales. From what he knew, these fantasy stories would have the prince finding a princess who will become a queen someday.
“When someone decides not to be the queen, and says, I’d rather go and be myself, it’s a big big decision, a fairy tale upside down. I’ve always been very surprised by that and thought it must have been very hard to do. That is the heart of the movie,” Larrain told Deadline.
As to why he tapped the “Twilight” star to portray the late royal, Pablo adored how Stewart can be very versatile, which he said was what was needed for the upcoming movie. He also said that he had seen how impressive the star was in her different films.
“[Stewart] can be many things, and she can be very mysterious and very fragile and ultimately very strong as well, which is what we need. The way she responded to the script and how she is approaching the character, it’s very beautiful to see. I think she’s going to do something stunning and intriguing at the same time. She is this force of nature,” Larrain said of Stewart.
Princess Diana, who was fondly called the People’s Princess, died in 1997 due to a car crash after being allegedly chased by paparazzi. She tied the knot with Prince Charles in 1981 and their love bore two kids, Princes William and Harry.
