Los Angeles police announced Monday they have arrested a man for using his Facebook to threaten to shoot up an elementary school. Kyle Bangayan, 24, was arrested at his parent’s home in East Hollywood when the FBI and LAPD found him in possession of nine guns, including rifles, handguns and a shotgun.

Police said Bangayan made general threatening statements about “kindergarten and elementary school kids,” although the Los Angeles Times reported he did not mention any specific schools. He also is said to have mentioned the elementary school shooting in Newtown, Conn., on Friday.

Bangayan is being held in a downtown jail on suspicion of making criminal threats with bail set at $500,000.

“It basically referenced what happened in Connecticut and it basically indicated that he was thinking about doing that type of thing at a school or schools here in Los Angeles," LAPD Commander Andrew Smith told KPCC public radio. "We don't know if he was actually planning on carrying these out. We have to assume he was, that's why he's sitting in jail right now."

LAPD Chief Charlie Beck said law enforcement would increase its presence around schools both before and after students take their winter break. At least 1,000 schools in the district be visited by a daily patrol every day after the holidays.

Bangayan’s arrest is just the latest that has come since the Newtown shooting, as noted by the Associated Press. A man in Springfield, Ohio, was arrested after threatening to go on a rampage of his own because he was so sick of people talking about the Connecticut shooting and a teen in Columbia, Tenn., was still behind bars Monday after taking to social media over the weekend to make similar threats.

Von Meyer, a 60-year-old Indiana man, was apprehended Saturday for suspicion of felony intimidation, resisting arrest and domestic battery. Police came to his home in Cedar Lake Friday after he threatened to kill his wife and spray bullets at a local elementary school.

Investigators found 47 guns hidden in Meyer’s home as he told police he wanted to “kill as many people as he could before police could stop him.”
