The MTV Video Music Awards are as known for their theatrics as the music. More than an award show, the night presents wacky moments, weird fashion, and unforgettable performances, whether for good reasons or ill.

Everyone remembers Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Madonna's infamous performance in 2003. Even if you can't recall what they sang, you know it ended with a kiss...two of them. Eminem came on the scene in 2000 with his hit Real Slim Shady. And in 2009, Lady Gaga gave a bloody rendition of Paparazzi.

This year, Gaga opened the show with You and I. Prior to the performance, fans weren't sure to be excited or scared. The performer is famous for her strange, odd, and certainly unpredictable antics.

I'm not expecting anything from Lady Gaga's performance at the #VMA's. She is unpredictable enough to prove all of my predictions wrong, a fan tweeted.

Not much was known prior to the show. It will be a continuation of everything I've been doing, is all the Mother Monster would say regarding details. However, she did spill to MTV news the inspiritation behind the performance.

Right now, I'm obsessed with the archetypes of our psychology and all the different people we can become or have become in the past, Lady Gaga said. Our potential for the future and how do we in our minds sort of compartmentalize our different personalities. So that's something that I'm fascinated with right now. It's almost as if I'm reviewing my life as a play.

My approach to music and performance is not just about what happens on the stage, she continued. My whole life is a performance, and it's about pushing the boundaries of pop culture and for myself, deciding where the stage begins and ends, not allowing anyone else [to tell] me when or how I can perform. I can perform when I choose.

No doubt, Lady Gaga performed... not just a song, but a monologue. She came out as her alter ego, Jo Calderone.
